*FRSC & MY NIN*

I went to FRSC Ojodu to renew my driver’s license. That was the only mission.

I arrived 8:15 AM. I took number 47. I sat with my NIN slip, my old license, and a bottle of water. The air conditioner was not working.

When they called my number, the officer at Counter 3 did not smile. He typed my NIN, 52183456789, and frowned. He turned his screen to me.

He said, “Madam, before we renew, you have to clear these vehicles.”

On the screen, under my name CHIDINMA IFEOMA NWOKOLO, there were three active registrations:

LAG-789-KT – Toyota Corolla 2019 – registered 14/03/2023
AKD-442-SY – Lexus RX350 2021 – registered 09/11/2024
KJA-101-QE – TVS Tricycle – registered 22/01/2025

I told him, “Oga, I have never owned a car. My husband drives us in his 2008 Corolla.”

He said, “Madam, NIN does not lie. All three are linked to your BVN. The Corolla has a flag. It was involved in a hit-and-run at Lekki Phase 1 on August 3, 2026. The case is still open at Maroko Police Station. That is why your license renewal is blocked.”

I laughed. It was not a funny laugh.

I asked him to print the records. He printed three pages. Each page had my passport photo from my NIN, my signature forged badly, and a phone number that is not mine. The contact address for all three vehicles is 12 Akinola Street, Surulere. That is my mother-in-law’s house.

I called my husband, Emeka, from the FRSC office. I put him on speaker. The officer was listening.

I said, “Emeka, why is there a Lexus RX registered in my name?”

He was quiet for five seconds. Then he said, “Ah, that one. I can explain.”

He explained from his office.

In 2023, his younger brother started a Bolt business. He needed cars in a clean name with no police record. Emeka used my NIN because as a civil servant’s wife my tax record is clear. He registered the Corolla first. In 2024, he added the Lexus when the business grew. In January this year, he added the keke for his cousin.

He said it was to “protect the family.” He said if anything happened, the police would call me first and he could settle it quietly.

Something happened. On August 3, the Corolla hit a dispatch rider at Igbo Efon and did not stop. The rider is still in LUTH with a broken leg. The police traced the plate to me. They have sent two summons to 12 Akinola Street. My mother-in-law has been collecting them and hiding them in her Bible.

I asked Emeka, “Why my name?”

He said, “Because you are my wife. Your name is safe.”

My name is now on a police wanted list for a hit-and-run.

The FRSC officer printed a form for me to fill. Affidavit of disclaimer. He said I need to go to Maroko Police Station with proof that I was not driving, then go to FIRS to prove I did not buy the cars, then go to court to swear that my NIN was used without consent.

He also said the Lexus has not paid roadworthiness since 2024. The fine is N340,000. Under my name.
