.The National Assembly staff have staged a protest over alleged non-implementation of the national minimum wage, unpaid allowances, and salary irregularities affecting workers in the federal legislature.
The protest was captured on a video, showing aggrieved staff members holding placards and chanting solidarity songs as they demanded urgent intervention from the authorities.
Sharing the footage, The ICIR wrote: “National Assembly staff are currently protesting over several issues, including alleged failure to implement minimum wage, non-payment of housing and wardrobe allowances, inadequate Muslim Salah bonuses, and short payment of staff salaries.”
In the video, the protesting workers were seen carrying placards with various inscriptions outlining their grievances, while repeatedly chanting “solidarity forever” as they called for better welfare conditions.
The demonstration highlights growing tension within the National Assembly workforce over what the staff describe as persistent neglect of their entitlements, including statutory wage adjustments and welfare packages.
Some of the inscriptions on placards seen in the footage referenced demands for payment of outstanding allowances and full implementation of salary structures in line with federal directives.
The protesting staff insisted that despite repeated complaints and internal engagements, their demands had not been addressed, leading to frustration and the latest public demonstration.
As of the time of filing this report, the National Assembly authorities had yet to issue an official response to the protest or the allegations raised by the staff.
In September 2025, a similar story done by SaharaReporters reported that staff of the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) staged a protest at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, barricading the main entrance over what they described as worsening hunger, economic hardship, and neglect by the management.
Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards, the protesters lamented that they are dying of hunger and sickness, berating the Commission for the lack of welfare and refusing to pay staff welfare.
At that time, the protesting staff demanded that until the Executive Chairman of the Commission met their demands, they would continue the protest non-stop.
“So many millions and billions have been given out by management staff that they are still suffering,” they said.
The staff accused the Commission’s leadership of insensitivity to their plight, citing unpaid allowances, poor welfare conditions, and the rising cost of living that has left many workers struggling to survive.
The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions including “DFA Mr. No Money”, “Our Management Failed Us”, “Where is our Saviour?”, “Hunger in the Commission Staff”, “Hunger is Killing Commission Staff”, “Medical for All”, “Commission Staff Dying of Sickness”, “Staff are dying of hardship”, amongst others.
They lamented that their salaries could no longer feed their families as prices were rising daily, adding that the Commission management had done nothing to cushion the effects of the growing hardship.
They further lamented that they have made appeals, but there has been no positive response from the commission.
The protest comes amid widespread demonstrations by Nigerian workers across several sectors, as inflation and food prices continue to climb.
