The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has confirmed the presence of American military personnel in the Country, emphasizing that their deployment has the approval of the Federal Government.
General Musa said the American soldiers have been authorized to collaborate with Nigerian forces in parts of Bauchi State to assist in counterterrorism and anti-banditry operations. He emphasized that the Federal Government remains committed to partnering with friendly Nation’s to strengthen Nigeria’s efforts in combating terrorism.
Speaking on the collaboration with the United States, the Defence Minister noted that such partnerships are not unprecedented. Nigeria has previously engaged in similar cooperation with countries including Liberia, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone. The U.S. personnel are expected to provide expertise in advanced technology, drones, and satellite systems, which are crucial to Nigeria’s ongoing security operations.
“Yes, some of them came. We’re working together. They have permission to operate in certain areas of Bauchi to assist with training in our fight against terrorism. They’re providing technological support, including drones and satellites, which are critical for our operations,” Musa said.
The Minister reassured that Nigeria’s Sovereignty remains intact, stressing that the U.S. presence is temporary and governed by clear agreements. “Everything we’re doing is based on an agreement. They respect our sovereignty and understand that their deployment is for a short time. Once the objectives are achieved, they will leave,” he affirmed.
General Musa further linked the need for international cooperation to the instability in the Sahel region, noting that the proliferation of arms and criminals following Libya’s collapse has heightened security challenges in Nigeria. He reiterated the importance of leveraging the support of allied nations in the fight against terrorism.
