Violence broke out on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress congress in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State, as gunmen attacked the lawmaker representing Ethiope Federal Constituency, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu.
The incident happened at Ovade, the venue chosen for the party congress in the council area.
Trouble started shortly after the federal lawmaker, who is the daughter of former Delta State Governor James Ibori, arrived at the location with her supporters.
Witnesses said tension rose as she attempted to gain access to the venue.
Armed men reportedly confronted her group and attacked them with guns and other weapons. The attackers allegedly tried to stop her from entering the congress ground.
Several people were injured during the clash, as confusion spread around the area. Supporters and other party members were seen running for safety while the situation turned chaotic.
Security personnel attached to the lawmaker were said to have intervened quickly, preventing the attackers from causing further harm. Their response helped to stop the situation from getting worse.
The congress, which was meant to be a routine party exercise, was disrupted by the violence. Party members who gathered for the event were left shaken by the development.
Following the incident, Ibori-Suenu called on members of the APC in Delta State to remain calm and avoid actions that could lead to more unrest. She urged supporters to maintain peace despite the attack.
