Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged residents to remain calm amid renewed impeachment proceedings against him by the State House of Assembly. The governor made the appeal during a church service on Sunday commemorating the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, assuring worshippers that the situation in the state would remain under control.
According to reports, Fubara explained that his decision to stay silent in the face of mounting political pressures is intentional and grounded in his faith. Reflecting on comments he made during the New Year banquet at the Government House, he remarked, “Dogs bark when they do not understand,” a reference to criticisms directed at his administration. He added that his focus on God gives him peace, encouraging residents to remain calm for the sake of the state’s stability.
Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu also addressed the congregation, emphasizing the importance of restraint, responsible conduct, and continued prayers for the administration. She described spiritual support as “the pillar sustaining the government” and urged citizens to act in a manner that reflects positively on the state.
The appeal comes amid heightened political tensions. Last Thursday, the Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, citing allegations of gross misconduct and unauthorized spending. This represents the latest attempt to remove the governor since he assumed office in 2023, following a protracted political feud with his predecessor and former ally, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Historically, multiple impeachment efforts against Fubara have faltered. In October 2023, proceedings were abandoned following intervention by President Bola Tinubu. A subsequent peace agreement with Wike led to the formal withdrawal of the notice in December 2023, but tensions resurfaced months later, resulting in restrictions on Fubara’s appointment powers at the local government level. Further attempts in March 2025 coincided with a presidentially declared state of emergency, suspending elected officials for six months. Fubara returned to office in September 2025 after another mediated peace deal.
The latest round of political tension follows Fubara’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, and the breakdown of his most recent agreement with Wike.
