Umaru Bago, governor of Niger state, on Tuesday inaugurated the All Progressives Congress (APC) digital and new media sub-committee ahead of the party’s national convention.
The APC national convention is scheduled to be held on March 27 and 28 at Eagle Square in Abuja.
The Niger governor chairs the digital and new media sub-committee for the convention.
Speaking during the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, Bago urged members of the committee to ensure effective communication before, during and after the convention.
He also asked members to leverage social media platforms to highlight the achievements and ongoing efforts of President Bola Tinubu, adding that communication gaps around government activities must be addressed.
He said the committee also plans to reach millions of people across the world with messages from the APC national convention.
Benjamin Kalu, deputy speaker of the house of representatives and co-chairman of the committee, also addressed members during the meeting.
Kalu called for a deliberate and coordinated effort to showcase the party’s achievements and policy direction, stressing the importance of shaping a compelling and consistent narrative across all digital platforms.
“We are depending on you so much to reach millions of our members in their homes,” he said.
“It is your duty to use all digital platforms, without restrictions, to showcase what we have done and not just about the convention. We are not just doing a convention.
“We are showcasing to the world that there is a party in Africa that believes in real democracy for the people.”
Kalu said the convention will demonstrate the APC’s commitment to democratic principles.
“Tell them we are not just doing a national convention; we are showcasing to the world that there is a party in Africa that believes in the principles of democracy and puts the people first,” he said.
“Tell the world that we are ready to advance the democratic ethos as defined by the founding fathers of democracy.
“Let the world know that as a ruling party we are well organised. Look at us having multiple committees because of this national convention.”
Ortega Ogra, senior special assistant to the president on digital and new media, said the committee will ensure effective dissemination of information to Nigerians and global audiences.
“We have a target to reach at the minimum 100 million Nigerians and, broadly speaking, 400 million people across the world, and we will do that with a combination of digital tools,” Ogra said.
