The African football community has been thrown into shock and mourning following the death of a renowned sports journalist, Mohamed Soumaré of Mali, during the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Soumaré, a highly respected figure in Malian and African sports journalism, was found dead in his hotel room where he was staying while covering the AFCON 2025 semi-final and final matches.
News of his passing has sent shockwaves across media circles on the continent.
Widely admired for his in-depth reporting, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the craft, Soumaré made significant contributions to the growth and development of sports journalism in Mali and across Africa.
Over the years, he covered several major international competitions and was regarded as a mentor to many young journalists.
As at the time of filing this report, the cause of his death has not been officially disclosed.
Moroccan authorities and tournament organisers are said to be handling the situation in line with established procedures, while arrangements are ongoing.
