Residents are counting their losses after heavy rainfall triggered a flash flood that caused significant damage to properties in parts of Abuja.
According to reports, videos circulating online showed floodwaters submerging vehicles, damaging machinery and destroying personal belongings, while parts of some structures were reportedly affected by the rising water.
One resident was seen emerging from a building and surveying the damage, with the extent of the destruction leaving him visibly distressed.
After the floodwaters receded, the resident reportedly showed the damage caused to his property and described the incident as an unprecedented experience.
“The thing that happened here is not a small thing. Thank God I survived it. I don’t know where I’ll begin,” he lamented while recounting the impact of the flood.
The resident said he had never witnessed such flooding before, describing how the force of the water moved vehicles from where they were parked and carried them to different locations.
“I’ve never experienced this. This is my first time. Like, water is moving cars from a particular spot and will shift it to wherever it likes,” he said.
He described the incident as a “calamity”, adding that the sudden nature of the flooding left residents with little or no time to evacuate their belongings or move valuables to safety.
The videos shared online showed the aftermath of the flooding, with vehicles and properties reportedly damaged by the force of the water.
