The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted cyberattack on its official X account, saying measures have been activated to prevent unauthorised access.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 5pm on Saturday and is being treated as a cybersecurity incident by the military authorities.

Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Appolonia Anele, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abuja.

Anele said technical and protective measures were immediately deployed after the suspected breach was detected to secure the account and prevent further attempts to compromise it.

She assured members of the public, media organisations and other stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to fully secure the affected account.

The Army spokesperson, however, warned the public and media against relying on suspicious or unauthorised information that may appear on the account while efforts to resolve the incident continue.

She specifically urged people to disregard any misleading or unverified material posted through the affected account, stressing that such content should not be regarded as the official position of the Nigerian Army.

The public and media organisations were advised to rely on the Army’s other verified communication channels for official information.

Anele reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting the integrity of its information, maintaining operational security and ensuring responsible communication with the public.

She also thanked Nigerians for their vigilance and cooperation, assuring that further information would be made available when necessary.
