In Izzi, Ebonyi State, Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate and representative of Ebonyi North under the All Progressives Congress (APC), recently went campaigning… only to find there was no bridge connecting him to the community.
So he stood on one side of a muddy river and solicited votes from the people on the other side.
The video making the rounds shows the senator in a white blazer and blue cap, gesturing across the water while a crowd listens from the opposite bank. The caption that accompanied the clip put it bluntly: “How do you campaign for people you can’t even cross the river to reach?”
Nwebonyi, who has held the Ebonyi North seat since 2023 and is positioning himself for a second term in 2027, has previously highlighted infrastructure challenges in the state. This particular moment, however, has drawn attention for a different reason: the stark visual of a sitting senator unable to physically reach the very constituents whose votes he seeks.
A bridge is not a luxury. It is basic infrastructure that determines whether a community remains connected or cut off, especially when the rains come and the river swells. The clip has sparked online conversation about the gap between political presence and tangible development.
