Two days after the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), Nigeria’s electricity grid manager, stated that power supply across thermal power plants in the country had improved, the power output from several Distribution Companies (DisCos) dropped to zero Megawatt (MW).
Major cities experienced a sudden power outage on Monday. A few hours later, some DisCos shared updates after a “collapse”.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On Saturday, NISO shared a press statement claiming that the Lagos-Escravos-Lagos gas supply infrastructure had been repaired and restored by the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company (NGIC).
According to NISO, the Lagos-Escravos-Lagos gas supply infrastructure was previously vandalised, and the restoration by the NGIC meant power supply would improve across thermal power plants — and Discos — in the country.
Part of NISO’s statement reads, “Currently, gradual power offtake is being carried out by the affected plants to ensure a smooth recovery and maintain the stability of both the gas supply network and the national electricity grid.”
NISO also noted that once thermal power plants began to receive gas from their respective suppliers, they would be integrated into the national grid to “further strengthen generation capacity and reduce the risk of outages”.
HAS POWER SUPPLY IMPROVED?
On Monday, the popular Nigerian National Grid X account posted that the power supply from several DisCos across the country had dropped to zero.
According to their latest post, the load from DisCos in Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and Yola had all dropped to 0MW.
“Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 14:01hrs which has resulted to a loss of power supply across our network,” Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) announced on Monday afternoon.
“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for the speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored.Kindly bear with us.”
