Heavy rainfall on Saturday, August 15, 2026, left parts of Abuja submerged, with flash floods trapping residents, submerging vehicles, and disrupting movement across several districts of the Federal Capital Territory.
Areas badly affected included Wuse 2, notably Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent; Gudu, around the Delight Event Centre; the bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi; Efab Estate in Lokogoma; Katampe; and parts of Area 8, Mabushi, and Asokoro. Videos circulating on social media showed expensive cars partially or completely underwater, floodwaters pouring into residential compounds, and motorists stranded as roads became impassable. One resident filmed the flooded Ebeano-Gudu road and bridge, appealing directly to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for urgent intervention. News outlets and X users shared clips of the chaos, with many noting that even well-planned areas like Wuse 2 were overwhelmed. The heavy downpour also caused severe flooding around the Delight Event Centre, leaving the premises and surrounding areas submerged in muddy floodwater. A resident who was driving through the area was heard lamenting the extent of the flooding. Another video highlighted the newly constructed Katampe Road, with a resident drawing attention to how heavily the road had been flooded. The flooding has renewed long-standing concerns about Abuja’s drainage systems, blocked waterways, and the conversion of green spaces. Federal agencies had earlier warned of elevated flood risks during the 2026 rainy season, particularly between August and September. As the waters recede, residents are counting losses and calling for better infrastructure and maintenance to prevent a repeat. In a city designed to showcase modern planning, Saturday’s downpour served as a stark reminder that nature still has the final say.
