Cross River State’s political equation is shifting toward the grassroots, and market women are at the center of it. A massive gathering of traders at the U.J. Esuene Stadium has underscored their growing influence as one of the All Progressives Congress’ strongest electoral assets ahead of 2027.
The event drew thousands of women from all 18 local government areas and three senatorial districts. Organizers and observers described it less as a staged rally and more as a spontaneous show of appreciation for Governor Apostle Sen. Bassey Edet Otu’s administration. Attendees said the turnout reflected confidence in policies they feel have directly improved livelihoods.

Much of the momentum, analysts note, traces to targeted interventions led by the Governor’s wife, Her Excellency Bishop Dr. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu. The programs have moved beyond relief, market leaders say, by funding small-scale enterprises and restoring economic independence.
At the same time, Cross River State Sports Commission Chairman, Mr. Lawrence Etta, has been credited for bridging the gap between government and communities. The Akamkpa-born official has maintained direct engagement with market associations and community groups, helping translate government policy into tangible benefits at the ward level.

Political strategists say the significance goes beyond numbers. Market women function as mothers, community leaders, and opinion shapers. Their networks extend into homes, churches, and neighborhoods, where their views often influence family and community voting patterns. A public endorsement from thousands of them therefore signals more than support — it indicates grassroots acceptance of the administration’s direction.
“What happened at U.J. Esuene Stadium was a political statement,” one party stakeholder noted. “It shows beneficiaries of the ‘People First’ agenda are prepared to defend it with their votes.”
