Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, is currently meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House.

The governor, clad in his signature white flowing outfit and red Kwankwasiyya cap, was seen heading to the president’s office around 4:13 pm on Monday.

This is Yusuf’s first known meeting with Tinubu since the president’s return from the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The visit comes amid reports about Yusuf’s planned defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) — a move that has been delayed several times since early this month.

Sources familiar with the talks say negotiations were stalled over the APC leadership’s refusal to provide Yusuf with a documented guarantee of an “automatic governorship ticket” for the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano and Yusuf’s political mentor, has publicly condemned the governor’s potential defection as an act of betrayal.

Kwankwaso has also warned that Yusuf could face consequences in the 2027 polls if he joins the APC.
