DPO KILLED BY STRAY BULLET IN CROSS RIVER WHILE TALKING WITH RIOTOUS STUDENTS

Divisional Police Officer in charge of Obudu Division in Cross River State, Mr. Gabriel Amawu, has allegedly been killed by a stray bullet.

It was learnt that some students from the Federal College of Education, Obudu, were celebrating the end of their examination. But when they were allegedly becoming rowdy, policemen were sent to arrest some of them.

The arrest generated protests in the town as the students invaded the police station. Since the incident occurred in the night, it was learnt that the DPO left his office, apparently to talk to the students when one of policemen shot into the air. The bullet reportedly hit the DPO who died on the spot.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Irene Ugbo, confirmed that Amawu was killed by a bullet.

She said: “Investigation is still on to confirm which bullet killed him.”

Ugbo said some suspects were already in police custody while the remains of Amawu had been evacuated.

Meanwhile, a student of the Government Secondary School, State Housing, Calabar, has allegedly stabbed his fellow student over cult activities.

Witnesses said the suspect allegedly brought out an axe and cut through his fellow student’s head during school hours on Tuesday, causing pandemonium in the school.

The suspect was, however, caught and handed over to policemen attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit.

The Special Adviser on Education to Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State, Castro Ezama, who was in the school at the time of the incident, condemned the dastardly act.

Ezama said he ordered the arrest of the student, who he suspected to be a cultist.

The suspect is alleged to have attempted to stab another student of the school during cult operation.
