A 100 level student in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Barnabas Otu, has allegedly drowned while swimming in a pool in Calabar.
Otu, who matriculated on Monday along-side other students, reportedly died at a popular resort located along Akai Efa in Calabar Municipality same day after he went to the resort to celebrate his matriculation.
A source said: “A group of CRUTECH students went to a resort (name withheld) to swim after their matriculation and that was how one of them (Otu) drowned.
“People were saying the guy was drunk, but what really transpired is still unclear as friends refused to say anything because the trauma of the death of their mate is still ringing in their head.”
The source added that the family of Otu wanted to take his body to his hometown at Ugep in Yakurr Local Government Area for burial, but the police refused.
“May be the police or relevant security agencies are investigating circumstances surrounding the boy’s death but his body has been deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Calabar,” the source added.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of CRUTECH, Mr. Onen Onen, confirmed the story.
He said: “The information is true, but I don’t have so details now because I travelled to the Okuku Campus (in northern Cross River State) for their matriculation and when I am back, I am going to compile a report on that.”
