Police in Ondo State yesterday arrested a 38-year-old man, Olamide Awogbayi, for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl (name withheld) during a church vigil.
Awogbayi reportedly lured the victim to an uncompleted building where he committed the crime
It was learnt that the incident occurred on Saturday, during a vigil at one of the churches situated on Idanre Road in Akure, the state capital.
Sources said the victim’s parents raised the alarm that their daughter was missing after they could not find her during the church programme.
A witness said the incident threw the entire church into panic after which a search party was put together to find the girl.
The witness added that the victim was later found in the evening of Sunday, in the uncompleted building where she was left all through the night by the suspected rapist after committing the crime.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Femi Joseph, confirmed Awogbayi’s arrest.
He said: “On the 1/2/2020 about 11p.m., in a church on Idanre-Akure Road, which was holding its vigil, Olamide Awogbayi (38) took the 13-year-old away to a nearby uncompleted building and defiled her in the early hours of the date the girl was declared to have been missing by the parents.
“The said suspect will be transferred soonest after preliminary investigation.”
